The University of Ilorin, Postgraduate Studies has released the registration procedure and requirement for registration for prospective postgraduate candidates. Please read through carefully to avoid mistakes that could lead to disqualification of your application.

 

 

Admission Requirements

Ph.D. Degree Programmes

Ph .D. Degree Programmes are available to holders of M.Ed.; M.Comm.H.; M.A; M.Eng.; LL.M; M.Sc.; and M.P.H degrees, with at least a 60% Grade Point Average (GPA) score in their M.A programmes.  A Ph. D. degree programme has an academic length of at least 36 months and at most 48 months for full – time candidates. OR an academic length of at least 48 months and at most 60 months for part – time candidates..

 

 

Master Degree (M.A) Programmes

M.A.; M.Eng.; M.Ed.; M.Sc.; LL.M M.Com.H., and M.P.H. degrees has an academic length of at least 24 months and at most 36 months for full – time candidates. OR an academic length of at least 36 months and at most 48 months for part – time candidates.

 

 

Postgraduate Diploma Degree Programmes

Candidates with Third class (honors) or lower may apply for Postgraduate Diploma degrees (PGD). Prospective candidates are to have in mind that, programmes lapses automatically at the expiration of the maximum duration for each programme.  However, a candidate may make an application for an extension of not more than 12 calendar months, in the first instance, subject to at most two such extensions. The Postgraduate Diploma degree programme has an academic length of 12 months, starting on the 2nd of October and ending on the 30th of September.

ELIGIBILITY FOR POSTGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMMES

  1. Candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science are required to posses the following requirements:
  2. Must possess at least a first degree from a recognized University in the Social Sciences, Sciences, Humanities disciplines or Engineering.
  3. Must possess a HND in Engineering or Computer Science from a recognized Polytechnics with at least a Lower Credit; and
  4. HND in any other study different from those in (ii) but preferably from Social Sciences or Sciences with at least a Lower Credit from a recognized Polytechnic or any other institution of same equivalence, with a minimum of one year cognate experience.

 

  1. Candidates for Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics are required to posses the following requirements:

(i) Must possess at least an honour’s degree from a recognized University in any of Social Science and Science disciplines;

(ii) Must possess HND in Statistics from a recognized Polytechnic with at least a Lower Credit.

 

  1. Candidates applying for the Master degree programmes who graduated from the University of Ilorin or other recognized Universities, must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) and must be applying for programmes in which they have their first degrees. All candidates must apply for their transcript to be sent to the Secretary Postgraduate School, regardless of the University the degree was obtained and before its expiration.

 

  1. Candidates applying for the Ph.D. degree programme must have obtained a relevant Master degree from the University of Ilorin or other recognized Universities, with an average score of a minimum of 60%. Short – listed candidates will be required to pass through qualifying assessment and interviews by the relevant Departments to satisfy the Postgraduate School. Candidates should therefore communicate with their relevant department for the date of the assessment for the Ph.D. degree programme. All candidates must apply for their Masters Degree transcript to be sent to the Secretary Postgraduate School, regardless of the University the degree was obtained and before its expiration. All candidates must have 5 O/L credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics or pass in Mathematics, where applicable.

 

  1. Foreign candidates who did not attend an English speaking University should submit to the Postgraduate School, a proof of their English Language proficiency, e.g., IELTS or TOEFL scores.

 

  1. An assessment (qualifying examination) will have to be written by Candidates applying for the Master degree and Postgraduate Diplomas Programmes regardless of the class of degree obtained, except candidates from the University of Ilorin who possess a First Class and Second class, Upper Division (Honours).

 

  1. Foreign candidates (Candidates who reside outside Nigeria, and non–Nigerian and applying outside the country) shall be not be subjected to the qualifying examination. However, International candidates applying from outside Nigeria for the Doctor of Philosophy programmes will be required to submit a proposal of not more than 5 pages, providing information of what research they wish to carry out and sent this by mail to pgschool@unilorin.edu.ng.
