Eko Electricity Distribution Company: How To Make Payment And Their Offices
Eko Electricity Distribution Company is just like every Electricity (power) distribution business owner world over, and same is true in Nigeria. The regulator, NERC (Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission) in our case in Nigeria, sets the license areas of distribution, consumer tariff, codes & standards for network and works to safeguard interests of both the consumers and shareholders.
The electricity / power industry in Nigeria has undergone tremendous reforms, and the business of Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution, which were together under single umbrella while still under NEPA and PHCN, have hitherto been unbundled into separate arms to achieve a better service. As a direct result of the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) bill, that was signed into law on March 11, 2005, a total of 11 distribution companies (called DISCO) were formed. These DISCOs, including EKEDP, were further privatized on 1st November 2013, thus completing the cycle of reform efforts in Nigeria that began almost a decade back.
Electricity Service
It is compulsory to have a contract with the district electricity company in order to receive power supply. In general, the information needed to get power connected is as follows:
First-time connection for a newly built house:
• Connection certificate/ License. This must be supplied by the electrician responsible for the initial installation of wiring in the property and should be stamped
• The First Occupation License or Certificate of Habitability available from the district serving your area.
For all electrical connections:
• Client Identification ( A verifiable form of I. D)
• If renting, details of the rental contract or details from the property title (If landlord hasn’t provided you with electricity)
• Account with your district
• Meter supplied by Eko distribution Zone
Once the contract is set up, bills will be received by post or can be viewed on the supplier’s website, showing the total amount that will be debited or for the customers using the prepaid meter option, they can recharge their cards and at the same time check balance of usage.
To terminate the contract, it is necessary to write a letter to the supplying company asking them to stop the service.
The electricity supply in most of Nigeria is 220~ 240V volts AC with a frequency of 50 hertz (cycles).
