The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has witnessed series of changes since it was separated from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in 1958. The Immigration Department as it was known then was entrusted with the core Immigration duties under the headship of the Chief Federal Immigration Officer (CFIO). The department in its embryo inherited the Immigration Ordinance of 1958 for its operation. At inception the department had a narrow operational scope and maintained a low profile and simple approach in attaining the desired goals and objectives of the government. During this period, only the Visa and Business Sections were set up.

On the 1^st Of August, 1963, Immigration Department came of age when it was formally established by an Act of Parliament (Cap 171, Laws of the Federation Nigeria). The head of the Department then was the Director of Immigration. Thus, the first set of Immigration officers were former NPF officers. It became a department under the control and supervision of the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs (FMIA) as a Civil Service outfit.

Types Of Passports Obtainable In Nigeria And Processes

• Diplomatic Passport  (Red cover)
• Official Passport (Blue cover)
• Standard Nigeria Passport (Green cover)
• Pilgrims Passport (Color varies from year to year)
• Seaman’s Book (Certificate of Identity) (Maroon cover)

Note:

• Acknowledgment slip & payment receipt plus 2 recent photographs are applicable in all cases
• Print out copy of duly completed application form
• Take printed and signed application forms to Passport office / Embassy / High Commission for further processing
• A guarantor must attach the following documents
  1. Photocopy of Data page of Nigerian standard Passport
  2. Driving License or National Identity Card

1. Letter of introduction from appropriate State Government, Federal Government Ministry / Organization.
2. Marriage certificate where applicable
3. Police report in case of lost passport
4. Letter of appointment / last promotion.
5. Submit application with supporting documents to passport office / Embassy / High commission

• Acknowledgment slip & payment receipt plus 2 recent photographs are applicable in all cases
• Print out copy of duly completed application form
• Take printed and signed application forms to Passport office / Embassy / High Commission for further processing
• A guarantor must attach the following documents

Who qualifies?

All Nigerians by birth , naturalization and registration. This is the most commonly used travel document in Nigeria.

1. Local Government letter of identification.
2. Birth certificate / age declaration.
3. 2 recent colour passport photographs
4. Guarantor’s form sworn to before a commissioner of Oaths / Magistrate /  High Court Judge
5. Parents’ letter of consent for minors under 16 years
6. Marriage certificate where applicable
7. Police report incase of lost passport
8. Submit application with supporting documents to passport office / Embassy / High commission
