The school of nursing is the training ground for nurses. Currently there are 86 schools of nursing, 33 schools of basic midwifery, 45 post school of basic nursing and post school of basic midwifery each and 22 departments of nursing. Nursing and midwifery council of Nigeria is the body responsible for issuing of licenses and regulation of nursing programmes and training nationwide.

 

 

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for nursing programme depends on the type of its programme you want to engage in. Below is a list of nursing programmes with their respective admission requirements.

 

General Nursing

Prospective students are required to have a minimum of five credit passes in WAEC and NECO in English Language and science subjects at not more than two sittings. This course will take 3 years to complete it. A successful student will become a registered nurse (RP). The general age requirement is between 18 and 35 years.

 

Post Nursing Programmes

There are post nursing programmes that can be studied at schools of nursing scattered all over Nigeria.  These programmes include post basic psychiatric nursing and post basic midwifery. Each of this course requires a registered nurse and some other requirements depending on the particular school. The two courses has a duration of one academic session. Successful candidates on the course will become Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) and Registered Midwife (RM) respectively.

 

Post Basic General Nursing Certificate Programmes

There are a number of post basic general nursing programmes done at certificate level which include; Ear, Nose and Throat Nursing, Occupational Health Nursing, Burns and Plastic Nursing, Pre-operative Nursing, General Nursing, Paediatrics Nursing, Public Health Nursing, Anaesthetist Nursing, Cardiothoracic Nursing, Orthopaedic Nursing, Accident and Emergency Nursing etc. The candidates for these certificate course must be a registered nurse or midwife with at least one year experience and license of operation. These courses have a year duration of training.

Application Process

Application process is uniform for general nursing across the country. Applicants are to obtain an application form which will be filled with all information and academic requirements details. They are then made to pass through an assessment after which successful candidates will be shortlisted for interview. Only successful candidates from interview will be granted admission. It is to be noted that you can also study nursing in some universities,  the requirements are the same.
