Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) as we know is one of the 11 power distribution companies that was successfully privatized and handed over to new investors on 1 November 2013 by the President Goodluck Jonathan administration. KANN Utility Limited (KANN) happens to have a total of 60% equity holdings in AEDC.
The Federal Government of Nigeria holds 40% equity in AEDC. With this initiative, it is of essence to let everyone know that the entire Distribution was not fully sold to the private sector, just 60% was sold out while the remaining 40% remains with the Government. AEDC has a franchise for the distribution and sale of electricity across an area of 133,000 km2 in the following state of the country. Federal Capital Territory, Niger State, Kogi State and Nassarawa State.
The company AEDC was established in 1997 and is ranked fourth among the eleven Nigerian distribution companies which are responsible for electricity purchase and distribution across their various regions. Within the franchise area covered, AEDC is also responsible for owning and maintaining the distribution network and supporting all the equipment in use. In addition AEDC also has the Mandate to manage meter installations, carry out servicing and billing of service rendered, co-ordinate consumer credit and revenue collection. The company is further subdivided into 26 geographic business units and 2 undertakings arms.
AEDC is cognizant of the requirement to maintain power quality which is in line with prevailing Nigerian regulations as set by NERC in their various Customer Service Standards of Performance rule, together with Internationally accepted standards practice (IEC 60050: Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electricity). Based on this reason, the Company has placed, as a priority, every plans to improve power supply which so far hasn’t worked out and technical efficiency through investment in the network to reduce electrical losses which happens to be the major loop hole in the entire supply chain.
