The American University of Nigeria ( AUN) is a private university in the northeastern part of Nigeria which offers American style of higher education in their academic programs for undergraduate, graduate and at professional levels. It was founded in 2004 by Atiku Abubakar. American University of Nigeria is accredited by the Nigerian National Universities Commissions .
The university was originally named the “ABTI American University of Nigeria” before it became the “American University of Nigeria”. It is the only American style university in Sub-Saharan Africa. The only other such university in Africa is the American University situated in Cairo, Egypt. American University of Nigeria is a member of the Association of American International Colleges and Universities as well as a member of the Global Liberal Arts Alliance.
The university offers sixteen undergraduate courses and eleven post graduate courses under five schools. Four of the schools are for undergraduate courses while the fifth is the post graduate school.

- School of Business and Entrepreneurship
- School of Law
- School of Information Technology and Communications
- School of Graduate Studies.
Admission Processes And Requirements
For undergraduate courses, applicants may apply for admission into any of the accredited courses online via the school website. The applicant is expected to possess some basic academic requirements which must be sent to the school’s admission office in Yola, Adamawa state or to the school’s liaison office in Abuja. Below are the documents to be sent:
- Results of WAEC, NECO, IGCSE, SSCE or the equivalent. (Not more than two sittings and must have at least five credit passes which must include Mathematics and English language)
- UTME result (minimum of 180)
- Copies of the applicants secondary school academic transcripts; SS1, SS2, and SS3
- A letter of recommendation or attestation from the attended secondary school.
- The prospective student would also have to provide a personal statement (Essay) about why the applicant chose AUN which must include applicant’s future ambitions.
- A photocopy of ID card, International passport (picture page),
- Four pieces of personal passport Photographs.
Admission Process For Direct Entry And Post Graduate
Direct entry students are advised to contact the school via admissions@aun.edu.ng to know the current requirements for direct entry.
For post graduate courses, applicants are required to possess a minimum of 3.0 out of 5.0 CGPA and must have a one year work experience. Qualified applicants may apply online for any of the entry in January, May or August semester. Other accompanying documents that must be forwarded to the graduate admissions office include:
- A well completed application form ( Downloadable from the school website)
- Graduation certificate with verifiable grades and required grade point average
- Official transcript from each university attended
- Copies of all certificates of each university attended
- Two (2) Letters of Recommendation
- Evidence of payment for the application fee
- A current Curriculum Vitae.
- A personal statement of purpose
- NYSC Certificate.

Tuition Fees
For undergraduate courses, charge rate is N53,000 per credit hour. Undergraduate courses are usually 15 credits per semester. Other fees may include Technology fees,Sports Fees, Student Activity, Health Fees, eBooks etc.
Post graduate courses are charged at the rate of N55,000 per credit hour. Most of the post graduate courses are 12 credits per semester. Other fees include application fee, health fee, technology fee and housing deposits. Students whose research exceed a year shall be required to pay for one full semester.
